Entering the Mainstream: The Quality and Extent of Online Education in the United States, 2003 and 2004

The Sloan Consortium has released their latest report. The overview is worth looking at to get a feel for how online learning is growing and is perceived.

It’s interesting that only 40.7% of students are at least as satisfied, with a whopping 56.2% being neutral towards online learning. It sure looks like students tolerate online courses but still desire the face-to-face. I take that as a cue that a blended approach will bring the most student satisfaction which means enrollments.

It’s also interesting that 20% of private nonprofits don’t see online learning as a long-term strategy. Clearly the public institutions are leading in enrollments for online courses. The trends for the opinion of private non-profits towards online learning is echoed in several statistics — students not as satisfied, learning outcomes inferior. I wonder if this reflects the nature of private nonprofits as primarily teaching institutions and not research institutions?
