New proposal for federal collection of student data troubling

This has been racing around the Edu_blogs I follow. Now educause has picked it up. While I don’t think I understand all the intricacies of privacy legislation, this seems like a potential problem for students.

I hadn’t realized that federal financial aid comes with some data sharing with the government — I guess it makes sense. I did know that aggregate data is provided to the government as well which also makes sense. But this idea of tracking individual students through the higher education system makes me uncomfortable. Something like this sounds like a deterrent to students going into higher ed. The Times article brings some more detail to the proposal. Wouldn’t this alter FERPA too?
