When I first read this article about Pasadena City College blocking staff & faculty machines but not student machines I almost jumped out of my seat. I couldn’t believe it — a College monitoring what websites staff & faculty visit! Shouldn’t they be spending their time fighting spam and viruses? Then I saw ….
Then I saw that their ISP is a non-profit with an acceptable use policy. OK. Well, if you’re going to get your Internet service from a place with restrictions you have to adhere to them. The faculty should lobby for a new ISP. But I still have problems with that degree of management of internet use at an academic institution — it just feels too much leaning towards the corporate IT control model.
